Oh how I loved this Sunday coat! I absolutely, positively begged my Mom to let me wear this to school one day - it was red and green checked with matching green woolen leggins, and a dark green scotty hat with a feather. Well, one day she finally let me wear my special coat to school with the green leggins.
Now this was during a real "boom" time at our school and my first grade was housed out in a white frame house on the property. All of a sudden our teacher, Mrs. Waterman, smelt smoke and went out into the cloakroom and she realized that the house was on fire. She hustled us out- through the flames and we all gathered on the playground, of course, without our coats. I was crying hysterically, everyone thought I was hurt!
Finally, I cried - "my Mom is going to be so mad - my good coat is in the fire!"
Of course, my Mom was not mad - they were just all so proud of Mrs. Waterman for getting us 27 children out of the fire safely. I remember that the picture was on the first page of the St.Louis paper - I drew a circle on the picture where my "special" red/green winter coat use to hang!

My Tribute to Aunt Betty:
Oh how I loved my Aunt Betty! I was always upset with Uncle Chuck for taking her away to California because then the visits were few and far between.
When Mom was living with us, Aunt Betty would call quite often and Mom even went out to visit Betty once. At that point and time in Mom's life, I really appreciated the break.
I was always "Winnie Jo" to Aunt Betty and we could talk and talk for hours. She really made me feel very special and when she died, I almost felt like someone had let all the air out of me! I was so thankful that I was able to go to her funeral and I really appreciate that Bobby did that for all of us.
