The Saga of the Coat:

Oh how I loved this Sunday coat! I absolutely, positively begged my Mom to let me wear this to school one day - it was red and green checked with matching green woolen leggins, and a dark green scotty hat with a feather. Well, one day she finally let me wear my special coat to school with the green leggins.
Now this was during a real "boom" time at our school and my first grade was housed out in a white frame house on the property. All of a sudden our teacher, Mrs. Waterman, smelt smoke and went out into the cloakroom and she realized that the house was on fire. She hustled us out- through the flames and we all gathered on the playground, of course, without our coats. I was crying hysterically, everyone thought I was hurt!
Finally, I cried - "my Mom is going to be so mad - my good coat is in the fire!"
Of course, my Mom was not mad - they were just all so proud of Mrs. Waterman for getting us 27 children out of the fire safely. I remember that the picture was on the first page of the St.Louis paper - I drew a circle on the picture where my "special" red/green winter coat use to hang!
