We lived in the county of St.Louis and a suburb called "Normandy". St.Charles was a very old river town on the Missouri and I remember it only takeing about 30 minutes to get there - so not really far with all the weekend traffic we dealt with. When Jim was either 3 or 4, Winn and George moved out of an apartment and lived out in the county also.
This area of MO was settled first by French Catholics. Many of the towns start ST. The early settlers were fur trappers and traded with the Osage indians for fur. The Cherokee and Osage were deadly enemies and hated each other.
I have never been to St. Louis. I would like to see the old towns.

Was St. Charles very far from St. Louis? Did you live in the city of
St. Louis or a small town?
